I got linked to this via Rachel and as someone who just sat through 6 very long months of an unpaid UN internship only to realize rather quickly she doesn't want to work for the UN and is now beginning her job search in earnest so she doesn't have to live in her parents basement forever. Thanks :) I needed this.

THANK YOU too. I really appreciate this entry. I'm trying to break into humanitarian aid, and after two overseas volunteering stints and now, finishing up graduate school, paying rent and paying my bills still seems as impossible and as far away as ever. But us newbies have a lot to offer, too, with our desire, our fresh eyes, our enthusiasm, etc... Your entry really helps buoy my spirits!

Let me just say....THANK YOU for posting this essay today.

I am a young woman desperately trying to break into the field of economic development policymaking, and endlessly running into the need experience to get the job to get the experience conundrum. I've used various permutations of the "i am a chance that no one is taking" line in my cover letters, trying to demonstrate to potential employers that I will be a great long-term investment. It is frustrating, and depressing, and this week marks another round of unreturned phone calls and ignored letters.

I know that with patience, fortitude, and determination I can make it happen...but reading this really reinforced that for me. Thanks so much for this! : )
